Illustration of a robot drawn by Andrea Ciulu with a biro pen - Andrea Ciulu illustrator - Illustrazione di Andrea Ciulu

Biro Pen is a tool for fantasy. The best drawings come with this humble pen that is supposedly meant to serve in meetings and briefs, but the way you can control fine lines with that is just awesome. So…yes, this robot was born during a meeting, it’s a 2 mins doodle. I kept adding features, maybe I could make an illustration out of it.

When the Web 2.0 bubble will pop

Illustration of a man about to be hit by a baseball - by Andrea Ciulu

Well, this illustration / doodle just started with a very light pencil outline and gained details in the making. I enjoy using the bare pencil as a sharp medium to give volume with defined strokes. This way I can give some extra reality with skin imperfection or with that horrified grin on the poor guy’s face.

Illustration by Andrea Ciulu - \"The Tough Guy\", a blue pencil doodle - Illustrazione di Andrea Ciulu
Looking at this illustration I realize this must be a blue-pencil period or something. Well, actually it’s more of a doodle, which I scribbed during a meeting. I love the blurred effect of these pencils, though: at the same time they allow you to mark your drawings and illustrations with very strong and dark lines, adding a lot of volume.
